Likewise, Edwina's a surprisingly compelling foil in this love story. Some viewers may not appreciate the love triangle, but it's hard not to root for her happiness even knowing that it means rooting against Kate. She's calm, gentle, and kind, yes, but she's also smart and motivated. You can understand why Kate wants to give her beloved younger sister the world.

Okay, back to the central angst: Mary's parents, the Sheffields, heard about Edwina's engagement and came racing to town. Mary's nervous to see the parents who disowned her for marrying the man she loved, and Kate wonders aloud if that kind of sacrifice is too high a price. Gee, I wonder why she's thinking about that.

Lady Featherington sends Jack out to con the less beloved (and therefore more fleecable) members of the ton, which is pretty much everybody but the Bridgertons. Jack, meanwhile, is looking at Portia with increasingly warm, admiring glances.

Anthony comes knocking to see if Edwina still wants to, you know, get hitched. She asks if he wants the marriage or her, and he says it's both. Their roles as the viscount and diamond yoke them together, and while he doesn't love her, he understands her.

Okay, back to our central couple. After giving Benedict a pep talk, Anthony finds Kate in the garden and tells her he loves her. Has loved her since that first glimpse on horseback. And hey, good news, she loves him too, although she warns him that he'll vex her every single day.

Anthony sees Kate alone in the gardens. He approaches her and asks her to marry him, saying that he loves her and has loved her ever since they first saw each other. He says he cannot imagine life without her. She says she loves him too, and they kiss as the fireworks go off.

We continue to see relationships be stitched back together as we watch Kate and Lady Mary finally share their feelings and work through everything this season. Lady Mary apologizes for not being more helpful with Edwina and allowing Kate to take on the burden. Kate then shares how Anthony was going to propose out of obligation for what happened between them. Not because he loved her and that is why she turned him away.

Van Dusen said in a Shondaland article: "I think [period shows] are considered a bit traditional and conservative. With Bridgerton, I wanted to take everything I loved about a period show and turn it into something fresh, topical, and relatable."[8]

Kate looks at the flowers Anthony brought. Mary asks how she's feeling and she says well. Kate has a lot to pack and she's not sure she's coming to the ball. Mary doesn't want her to return to India to escape what's difficult. She knows the feeling and it's not wise. Kate starts to cry and says everything that has happened is her fault. She doesn't forgive herself. She was supposed to help their family. Mary says it was her failing as a parent that Kate was left to guide Edwina alone. They were both grieving and Kate had already lost her mother before her father. Kate felt like she owed Mary for accepting her as her own, but Mary says she never had to earn her place in the family. She loved Kate from the day she met her. Love is never owed. Kate came into her life as a daughter and she never saw Kate as anything else. She deserves all the love in the world. Kate says Anthony was going to propose to her, but she couldn't let him because it was out of obligation. Kate says Anthony doesn't love her. She couldn't let him propose. Mary hugs Kate.

Anthony finds Kate in the garden and asks if she's still planning to leave. Kate says she has her family's blessings and since the queen has saved both their families from ruin, there are no obstacles. He knows she loves her family as he does his. He was afraid of losing Kate. That's why he couldn't visit after her accident. He tells her he loves her and has since they first raced each other. Every moment since, he's loved her. She doesn't have to accept it, but she must know it's true. She doesn't know what to say except that she loves him, too. Anthony wants a life that suits them both. He'll humble himself before her because he wants never to live without her and wants to marry her. Kate says there will never be a day he doesn't vex her. Fireworks start nearby and Kate accepts his proposal. They start kissing as the fireworks continue.

Francesca is a bit of an enigma in the Bridgerton family because she's often mentioned but rarely actually present until her own book. She was away at school, and then she got married early on with little fanfare to an earl who she loved dearly, and then she moved away to Scotland. A couple of years into her marriage, her husband dies, and her best friend and husband's cousin Michael, who has always been in love with her, becomes the new earl.
